A floating shelf does not really float. We checked.

Behind every floating shelf there is steel in a wall. Here is which steel, what comes with it, and where it stops.

What you get from MAHOWA

  • Hettich Titan 1, € 18 per shelf Galvanised steel supports that disappear into the back of the shelf; from the front you only see wood, no bracket underneath. Once it is up you adjust them: ±4 mm in height, ±4 mm sideways, and the tilt of the shelf.
  • From 24 mm — so on 40 mm Hettich gives 24 mm as the minimum board thickness for this support. Our 22 mm board is too thin for it; choose that and the option is switched off in the configurator. The holes (12 mm) are drilled here, in the shelf you ordered — not by you, and not by guesswork.
  • Two supports, more as it gets longer Up to about 84 cm two is enough. At 200 cm it becomes three or four. Whatever your size needs is included in the price.
  • Screws and plugs are included For a solid wall. They travel in the parcel with the shelf.
  • What the manufacturer states Hettich counts per square metre of shelf: 160 kg/m² for a shelf of 100 × 20 cm, 100 kg/m² at 100 × 25 cm and 50 kg/m² at 100 × 30 cm. For those three sizes that comes to roughly 32, 25 and 15 kg on the shelf. That is what the support does; what your wall does is the next point.

What is not included

  • Plugs for plasterboard or a hollow wall The plugs supplied are for a solid wall. Fitting to plasterboard, a hollow wall or a stud wall means getting suitable plugs yourself — that is usually where the limit is, not in the oak.
  • Tools No drill, no spirit level, no pencil. We assume you have those or can borrow them.
  • A number for the maximum load That depends on thickness, span and above all on your wall. We would rather put no figure on it than one we cannot stand behind. Tell us what goes on it and what your wall is, and you get a real answer.
