22 mm is fine and light in the picture — for books, frames and smaller rooms.

40 mm is pronounced and becomes an element in the room in its own right. From lengths of about 120 cm that thickness also gives noticeably more stiffness.

There are four. Three of them are straight and differ only in the profile of the front face; the fourth follows the shape of the tree.

Straight edge — square and sharp, the crispest of the four.
Eased edge — the top corner is lightly broken, softer under your hand.
Rounded edge — the front is finished round, in one continuous line.
Natural edge — the line the tree drew itself. That costs 15 % more, because each board takes more material and more work.

That depends on four things: the thickness of the wood, the span between the brackets and above all on your wall. A solid wall carries more than plasterboard — that is usually where the limit is, not in the oak.

As a guide: 22 mm stays calm with books, frames and plants over shorter lengths. From about 120 cm, or with heavier things, you choose 40 mm. A 22 mm board over 1.6 metres will sag in time — which is why those combinations are not in the catalogue.

Do you know exactly what is going on it? Ask us with your size and your wall type, and we will say which thickness holds. We would rather give an honest answer up front than a shelf that starts to droop.

Wood keeps moving with the humidity in the house. In winter, with the heating on, it gets drier; in summer it takes up some moisture again. With a well-dried solid board it is a matter of millimetres.

After delivery, let your board lie for a few days in the room where it is going to hang before you fix it. Do not hang it right above a radiator or in full sun — that is what really pulls wood out of true.

By default we deliver untreated: sanded, nothing more. That way you see the wood as it is, and you can choose what you do with it.

If you want it finished straight away, we oil it with one coat of oil that colours and protects at once, and lets the wood breathe. You choose from five finishes; they lie side by side on the product page, each time the same board in the same light. Oiling starts at € 11 and follows the size, whatever the size.

We do not use lacquer: that lays a film over the wood instead of drawing into it. See also care.

Yes. In the configurator choose “Custom size” and fill in your own length and depth. The price adjusts straight away and you order online as usual. Do you need a size outside the range of the configurator? Ask us.

Yes, with Select. There every piece is photographed separately — front, back, end grain and a detail — with its own measurements. What you see is the piece you get.

With Standard you choose the size and we find a board to match it. That is better value; you then leave the choice to us.

Because it is real wood. Grain, colour nuance, knots and fine cracks in the end grain differ from board to board. Those are not faults but the marks of solid oak. For made-to-measure work and unique pieces we send you a photo of your board before it ships.

Yes, collection at the workshop (near Ghent) is possible by appointment. You choose that at checkout; no shipping costs are charged then.

In the configurator you choose: without fixings, or with invisible brackets for € 18. Those are Hettich Titan 1 supports in galvanised steel; they disappear into the back of the board, so from the front you see only wood. They need at least 24 mm of board, so they go on the 40 mm and not on the 22 mm.

What your wall can take counts for more than the wood. A solid wall carries far more than plasterboard; the screws and plugs supplied are meant for a solid wall. If you are hanging on plasterboard or a hollow wall, provide suitable plugs yourself.
